WAP

Many must be familiar with the acronym WAP but little knows what it really is. WAP (Wireless Application Protocol) is the system that integrates mobile phones with internet. Initially it was used only by Nokia, Ericsson, Motorola and phone.com, now it is being used by hundreds of members. A WAP device can’t just be a mobile phone. Even a PDA, a notebook can be a WAP device. Its basic idea to use the existing digital wireless infrastructure Users can literally call up a WAP gateway over the wireless link and send Web requests to it. The gateway then checks its cache for the page requested, If present, it sends it; if absent, it fetches it over the wired Internet. Still people don’t like to use internet over the tiny screen, paying by per minute. So, WAP was flop in a sense. However, new version of WAP, WAP 2.0 is working on some new technology and may be bit hit.

Hiding your drives

Most users who are using computer have different important and personal information in their hard disk. They may not want others who use the same computer to see their personal stuffs. The information in may be crucial for decision making or very confidential for others to take a peek at it. The easy solution for all these troubles is you can simply put all your confidential data in one drive and hide it from other users. It’s so much more that just hiding you specific folders. When people aren’t able to see the whole drive, they won’t suspect of anything being hidden. For this you have to be an administrator account holder. Log on as an administrator or some other user who have administrative privileges. Then follow the procedure:

  • Start -> Run
  • Type ‘gpedit.msc’ (the group policy explorer opens)
  • Go to Local Computer Policy -> User Configuration ->Administrative Template->Windows Components
  • Select the Windows Explorer
  • In the right pane, there is an option ‘Hide these specified drives in My Computer’. Click it.
  • Click the ‘Enabled’ radio button, pick one of the following combination and press Ok
  • Exit group policy

Now open My computer. You’ll find the drive shave been hidden.

Bluetooth Vs WiFi

We are very familiar to Bluetooth. It is a short-range-frequency technology operating at 2.4 GHz and used for transmitting data. For more details on Bluetooth you can read my post on it named Bluetooth. This time I want to give some information in WiFi technology. Wi Fi stands for Wireless Fidelity and s used to define any of the wireless technology in the IEEE 802.11 specification. It is similar to Bluetooth in the sense that it is also a way to get Internet access. To use it you must be using a computer or PDA that has Wi Fi connectivity already working. Most portable computers can add WiFi using that plugs into a PC card or USB port. While both Bluetooth and WiFi are wireless technology trems, Bluetooth lives under the IEEE protocol 802.15.1, while WiFi falls under the 802.11 specification. This means that the applications using WiFi technology and those using Bluetooth are not interoperable. WiFi boasts faster data transfer speeds and range, making it a good replacement for Ethernet systems, while Bluetooth require less power and is therefore, more prominent in small appliance such as PDAs.

Fast shutdown

In today’s world time is money and money as everybody knows is everything. People don’t have time nowadays. They are so busy with their work that they hardly have time to breath. In such situation what I am tying to do is provide my readers with a process by which the ‘shut down’ time of their PC can be minimized i.e. simply the computer will shut down quickly. The process is simple but since it is related to the registry of the OS, it should be carefully done. Any change in wrong place may cause instability of the system.

The process is as follows:
Go to registry (click start->run, type regedit and enter)
Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop
In the right pane of the registry make following changes

  • Change the value of AutoEndTasks to 1
  • Change the value of WaitToKillAppTimeout to 200
  • Change the value of HungAppTimeout to 200

And that’s it. Now, shut down your computer and see if it really works.

Run commands

My previous post was on Keyboard shortcuts which were for the users who want to be really good at using only keyboards instead of mouse. With this other will have the feeling that the user is really good at what he is doing. This time also I am giving out a post on similar topic to ease the users.

‘Run’ command is one of the key features of windows OS and it is an easy way to get to the desired directory or run an application which you don’t know where it really is. For this you open the ‘Run’ dialog box, type the run command and enter. Some of the run commands that I use frequently are:

Run command

Opens

Regedit/ regedt32

registry

Notepad

Notepad application

winword

Microsoft Word

Control/ Control panel

Control panel

control folders

Folder option dialog box

control userpasswords

User account dialog box

lusrmgr.msc

Local user & group dialog box

Gpedit.msc

Group policy

Msconfig

System configuration utility

These are just few samples of the run commands. For more run commands go to registry (start->run-> regedit). Then go to:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\App Paths
There are list of all the commands that you can use in ‘Run’. Enjoy.

Choosing a right IT College

IT training centers and colleges has mushroomed, but finding a quality institution can be daunting. Fortunately, a science background is no longer always a prerequisite. Science is required for Bachelor in Computer Engineering, but even with a commerce or arts background you can take Bachelor’s courses such as Bachelor in Information Management, Bachelor in Computer Application.

The cost varies with colleges, but on average a four year course costs between Rs. 200000 and Rs. 300000 in Nepal. Most focus on one specific programming language, but some teach a mix to give their trainees added advantages.

So how do you choose where to go? As an IT graduate I know some of the necessary things. First, look at the institutes' infrastructure, and the qualifications of its teaching staff. If it has a couple of antiquated computers and teachers who’ve obviously never worked in IT, it’s a bad sign. Whenever possible, check with former students about their experiences. It also pays to join colleges with genuine links that could get you jobs. Several software companies generally select potential employees from final year students. Always try to find the one best, suited to your interests.

It’s also essential, in cutting-edge world of IT, to make sure your course is up-to-date. Until and unless your syllabus is on par with international standards, your graduates won’t be considered saleable on the market.

Scope of IT Education

The simple fact that Bill-Gates outpaces nearest contender for ‘richest person in the world’ by a staggering eight billion dollars would make anyone consider going into the software racket Computers, and programs we use n them, are no fly-by-night fad.

Nepali software programmers and IT technicians’ earnings are considerably more modest than Gates’, but still not too shabby. Usually salaries begin at Rs.7000 and go as high as Rs.80000 per month. There’s potential and demand for competent professionals, especially in banking and medical sectors and with internet service providers.

While a simple computer course may give you skills to get a job, people with academic degrees have an edge. Major IT employers look for candidates with a previous academic background, because it can help them adapt faster to changing trends and new technologies. National companies such as D2 Hawkeye, Midas Technologies, and Mercantile recruit new faces on a yearly basis. However, programmers say that if you’re committed and creative, the sky is unlimited.

Backing up data

The most important part of using a computer is for the purpose of information. Information is processed data. We feed data in the computer and after processing the data the computer gives out the output in the form of information. Some data is very valuable and needed for making decisions. So, they need to be backed up for future reference in case something happens to the original data.

Back up can be done in several ways. There is no specific way of backing up your data. Some back up their data just by copying their data in some other hard drive or CDs/DVDs. This is also a kind of backing up your data but using this way you can’t back up your system state data. So, for the ease of the users Windows OS has got its own back up application called ‘Backup Utility’ which allows you to backup your programs, files, system state or even restore data from backup. To use the application click start->Programs->Accessories->System Tools->Backup. Another way you can run this utility is through run command ‘ntbackup’. Just go to ‘run’, type ‘ntbackup’ (without quotes) and enter. The application starts and provides you with different functions that you can choose according to your ease and necessity. It’s a small application and handy application and I hope that user use this application to back up their data.

About raZeet

To all my readers ….. “raZeet” is my first blog and please don’t send me comments asking why I kept it, what does it mean or why ‘Z’ is in the middle and still in capital. I don’t have any explanation for that. It is a mixed blog actually and has got different flavors of life. In it, I write about things that I face in my daily life. Even the advertisements on it are what I face during my day to day life. As already being written in my first post, ‘raZeet’ has got posts on various stuffs like love, relationship, education, technology, health, computers, advertisements and many more. I like it very much as my emotions are attached to it. I have written some of my life experiences on it but I do face many difficulties with it while submitting it in directory because I don’t know which category to submit it to. I think that there should be a category named ‘miscellaneous’ where I can submit its link.
