System File Checker

The System File Checker is a built-in function for Windows XP that allows the system to go thru and check all major protected Windows XP system files against the original versions stored on a valid XP CD. This is extremely handy if there is any suspicion of any corrupted system files that are leading to unusual Windows behavior.

The procedure is access the System File Checker is as follows:

1. Start -> Run -> type ‘SFC /scannow’ without any quotes and then press enter
2. The System File Checker will then go thru all you impt. System files and make sure that they have not been altered in any way.
3. If any major system files are corrupted or are altered in any way, they are replaced with the original ones from your \Windows\System32\Dllcache\ directory and\or your Windows XP CD.
4. You may be prompted to boot if necessary.

Note that you can use switch /scanonce to scan after the next reboot or /scanboot to scan on every reboot instead too. Also if you choose /scanboot and then want to stop a scan after every reboot at some point, use the /revert switch.

Enable your Task Manager

There are many great registry tweaks but this time I am just giving out a simple tweak. Actually I faced this problem when there was some kind of virus in my computer system. The ‘Task Manager’ was disabled and when I tried to open ‘Task Manager’, it showed some message saying that ‘The Task Manager has been disabled by the Administrator’. So, I tried to find how I can enable my ‘Task Manager’ again. Here is a process how you can enable your task manager through registry.

2. Type ‘regedit’ without quotes
3. Navigate to ‘HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System’
4. In the right pane there is a DWORD value ‘DisableTaskMgr’
5. Double click it and change it’s value to ‘0’
6. Exit registry

Now, when you right click on your taskbar you can see that your ‘Task Manager’ is enabled.

Installing IIS in Windows XP Pro

Windows XP to be discontinued in Jan 2008

Microsoft will discontinue selling its Windows XP OS by early 2008, according to the company’s Windows Life-cycle policy web page. The company will stop selling Windows XP from Jan 31, 2008 despite its popularity and will focus on marketing its new Windows Vista OS, which has received lukewarm response since its launch earlier this year. The webpage also said retail license will be discontinued at that time which means Professional edition, Tablet PC, Professional x64, Home edition, and Media Center edition of XP will not be available next year.

According to news reports, a company spokesperson called it standard practice to allow OEMs, retailed and system builders to continue offering the previous version of Windows for a certain time after a new version had been time after a new version had been released. Microsoft has also confirmed that from 31 January 2008, large PC maker, such as Dell, HP and Toshiba will no longer be able to buy licenses for the software so they can install it on new machines. Meanwhile, Windows Vista has not been received too well in the US and Europe. A poll by US market researched firs Harris Interactive found that only 10% of those questioned were planning to upgrade to Windows Vista in the near future. The study of 2,223 web-using Americans found that although 87% had heard of the OS only 12% of those who knew of it were planning to install it. While the survey did find that some people waited for Vista even before buying a PC, 60% said that its appearance had no effect on their spending plans. It also found that currently 79% of those questioned were using Windows XP on their home PC.

Use remote desktop to connect to your PC from anywhere

If you have Windows XP Professional installed in your PC, have you noticed that it includes a built-in software ‘Microsoft's remote desktop’, which can be used to access your computer from anywhere if you have Internet access. Not only can you access your system, you can actually see and manipulate the desktop environment just as if you were seated in front of the system.
It’s not that difficult or complicated as it sounds. In order to use Remote Desktop to connect to your home computer remotely, it must first be enabled.
1. Enable Remote Desktop
Right click on 'My Computer' then select the 'remote' tab, and check the box entitled 'Allow computers to connect remotely to this computer'.
(Note: please make sure that all of your user accounts are using strong passwords before you enable this option, otherwise anyone with internet access and a Windows system may hack into your computer. Also, before using the 'Select remote users' button, you can select user accounts that have the access to your computer remotely.
2. Now you can just run this program from the run command ‘mstsc’ or from the Programs -> Accessories -> Communication -> Remote Desktop Connection and then use it according to you need.

If you wish to install Remote Desktop Web Connection for older versions of OS, it’s also available.

I grew up watching Kung-fu and Karate. As a kid I always wanted to be a martial arts expert. Especially, I was fascinated by the ninjas and always wanted to dress up like them. Running legacy software in Windows XP

I had Windows 2000 installed in my PC and there are many times that I’ve personally been in a situation when I needed older versions of OS to run some legacy s/ws. Some of the games and softwares written for older versions of OS such as DOS and early Windows 95 weren’t compatible with Windows 2000 which was a very big problem.
Windows XP whereas include several options designed to make your older version s/ws more compatible with the XP version of the Window NT kernel. XP can be set to mimic various OS environments for that program only. If you have a program that simply refuses to work on XP, you can give these methods a try:

1 : After installing the application, right click on the executable file or the shortcut to it, and select 'properties.' Choose the 'compatibility' tab. The first section in this window 'compatibility mode,' covers mimicking various operating system environments to try and make your application more comfortable. If you know the application is designed for one of the operating systems contained in the drop-down box, try it out.
2 : You can also set the program to run in 256 colours and/or 640x480 resolution, which many older software titles require.

With these options I’m sure that many of your problems regarding the applications that require older OS will be solved.
